Beijing Winter Olympics: Volunteers prepare for the Winter Games
Our reporter Cui Hui'ao who brought us the highlights from the Nordic Combined test event in Zhangjiakou, also spoke to one of the volunteers.
This is Guyangshu venue cluster. In less than two months, it will host a number of exciting competitions including ski jumping, nordic combined, and winter biathlon. More than 400 volunteers are working at the cluster this weekend, as two test events are being hosted here in Chongli.
ZHANG NAN Volunteers Deputy Manager, National Cross-Country Skiing Center "Our volunteers are students from six universities in Hebei, and four universities in Beijing. They are trained on things like how to guide visitors around Olympic venues."
Two-thirds of the volunteers work inside the closed loop. The others provide services including media and transportation. One of them is 20-year-old Cao Jiyu, who works at the media center.
CAO JIYU Volunteer "I am a third-year student at the Hebei Institute of Communications, studying broadcasting. I was selected as a volunteer for the Beijing Olympics after five rounds of interviews."
It's an opportunity that she values deeply.
Cao Jiyu has already served as a volunteer for a high school sports league. Now she is on a much bigger stage. Her work is mainly handing out score sheets to reporters and updating important information on the bullet board – like the latest competition schedule, media buses, and press briefings.
CAO JIYU Volunteer "I think it's a really good opportunity. I've made a lot of friends with volunteers from other universities. We get along and it's like we are in this together. But it also forces me to practice my English and communication skills."
Skills that will be needed down the road, as she wants to become a TV reporter when she graduates.
In the next two months, Cao and her fellows will undergo more training. This test event will help them fine-tune their service. The goal is to showcase their very best at the Olympics.
CUI HUI'AO Chongli, Zhangjiakou "Volunteers are an integral part of the Olympics. They help staff run the facilities and venues, and assist spectators and athletes. Coming from mostly universities, the volunteers here say they cherish the opportunity to work at the Winter Games, which is sure to be an unforgettable experience. Cui Hui'ao, CGTN, Chongli."
